Trouble getting started? Here's a brief overview of carpeting styles and fibers to help you decide which one is just right for you.

• The choices in carpet pattern and color are immensely varied.
• The static discharge from carpet can be shocking. Be sure to ask about anti-static improvements when you are choosing new carpeting. It's not as bad as years ago when you could scuff your feet on the floor to "charge up" and shock your siblings for fun.
• Nothing beats the warmth of carpeting, especially here in the upper Midwest.
• No worries about scratches (like wood) or tears (like vinyl) or chipping (like ceramic). Carpet wears well.
• People who object to carpeting fear that it is never clean. Over time carpeting may not ever wear out but more often will be replace because it will no longer have a clean, fresh, day-you-bought-it look.
• Carpet is wonderfully quiet. No pet nail clicks or footsteps to wake you up in the morning.
• Romp-a-bility! Rolling around on the floor for any reason is much more comfortable and fun on carpet.
• Some allergy sufferers have a hard time living with carpeting.
• Could mold in very damp areas (basements).
• Carpeting does fade over time, especially if in a room with bright sunlight.
• Depending on your point of view, having a floor that is not permanent can be a plus or a minus. Carpet does have a life cycle, so if you are looking to refloor once and only once, wood floor or ceramic is a better choice. On the other hand, if you like to change the look of the room once in awhile, it is relatively easy to install new carpeting. Also, if you want to preserve wood flooring while the kids grow up, it is a great solution to lay carpeting until the wood floors are less vulnerable.
